Breastfeeding Success with Dr Robyn Thompson & Dr Melanie Jackson
This recent podcast, hosted by Dr Melanie Jackson demonstrates what magic can happen when two experienced healthcare professionals get together for a 'chat'.
In Episode 43 of the Great Birth Rebellion Podcast, Mel invited Dr Robyn Thompson, experienced midwife and founder of The Thompson Method to join her to discuss breastfeeding success.
The two combined in an energetic conversation about breastfeeding complications, and some of the reasons why they are so common.
One of the most significant breastfeeding complications in Dr Robyn's experience is painful nipple trauma, with breast milk production concerns and commonly prescribed medications closely following. These 3 common breastfeeding complications impede the newborn and young baby's innate ability to breastfeed.
These two very experienced midwives discuss the physiology of breast milk production referred to as the 'milk coming in' for the newborn, emphasising the importance of immediate skin to skin contact, if the baby's Apgar Score is 7 or above. This time, which Dr Robyn refers to as the 3 Golden Hours, is important for the initiation of the first breastfeed, which is critical for the establishment of your breastfeeding journey.
Anything that unnecessarily interrupts or delays a mother and her baby during these early hours significantly increases the risk of painful breastfeeding complications such as breast engorgement and mastitis.
We hope you enjoy this wonderful podcast.
